Chingay 2015

What I learnt about Chingay (Singapore's float parade)

1) It started off over a 100 yrs ago as a procession for Guanyin (the goddess of Mercy). The Chinese community brought it with them to Southeast Asia and slowly, it evolved to a float decorating competition in Penang

2) Singapore first celebrated it in 1973

3) Firecrackers were allowed during the parade to bring up the spirit of the people who may have be disappointed by the ban on firecrackers which was then just implemented

4) From 1977, it became a multicultural parade
